Acne Health: Taking Care of Oily Skin

By Martha Fitzharris

Acne is a wide spread skin problem. Even though it mostly affects teenagers, there are many adults that suffer from acne problems their entire life. Perhaps the most affected people are those with oily skin.

The excessive production of sebum is one of the main causes of acne. This can clog pores and lead to pimples, especially if the sebum is mixed up with dead skin cells and dirt. Therefore, if you want to keep your oily skin acne free, you need to start finding products that can help control the production and presence of sebum.

There are many acne products on the market that are geared towards oily skin types. Here are some pointers that you should keep in mind when you are searching for the right acne care products.

How to find The Right Acne Remedy

You might believe that oily skin is strong enough to withstand being treated with harsher, chemical products. While that isn't entirely untrue, you should also keep in mind that sebum production is the body's natural response to irritation. This means that if you use any harsh product on the skin, it will be met with extra sebum production.

Since your objective is to avoid excess sebum production, you should prefer using gentler skin care products and methods. First of all, you should only cleanse twice a day to keep your face clean and avoid triggering more sebum production.

Second, exfoliation is a good thing especially for oily skin types. Once again you should opt for gentle methods of exfoliation to remove dead skin cells without stripping away the skin's natural lipid barrier.

Finally, a good oily skin care routine also includes a moisturizer. Moisturizing is essential to all skin types and oily skin is not the exception. When treating oily skin you should try a water based moisturizer instead of a creamy, oil-based one.

If your concern is aimed towards keeping blemishes and pimples from appearing, then you should prefer an acne cream that is especially made for spot treatment. Here is a list of ingredients you should be on the lookout for.

*Benzoyl Peroxide

This medication eliminates the bacteria that can lead to acne. It also helps avoid the formation of plugs by removing dead skin cells from inside the hair follicles.

*Salicylic Acid and Sulfur

Both of these medications have been used for decades to treat skin problems. They help eliminate existing blemishes by unclogging pores and eliminating blackheads.

*Retinoic Acid

Topical application of this medication has shown a great improvement in skin's health. Retinoic acid also helps keep pores clear by getting rid of dead skin cells that can be found inside the hair follicles. However, be warned! This product can aggravate your skin and acne.

No matter how many products you try, none will be as successful if you don't try a very basic natural acne treatment - change your diet. If you can't live without that greasy hamburger or the cream-filled donuts then you're probably making your oily skin worse. A quick and simple solution is switching sweets for fruits and adding vegetables and whole grains to your diet.
