Learn how to Cure Your Acne with Lemons

By Anna Smithson Hayes

Did you know you can clear up your acne with lemon juice? Why should you try it? First, they are cheap. Your local market will have lemons in the produce section. You can experiment with one lemon and see if it works for you. Juice it and keep the juice in the fridge. In addition lemon juice is simple to apply. You can use a cotton swab to dip in the juice and wipe liberally on your skin.

The last benefit is that it works very well. Lemons contain salicylic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid. You may be familiar with alpha hydroxy acid as the active ingredient in commercial acne treatments. Lemons, like many fruits are high in the antioxidant vitamin C. It is good for healing acne wounds and scars. Dead skin cells clog pores and cause acne. Lemon juice unclogs these pores.

I have tried several other home remedies for acne. I've tried ammonia, which chemically in NH4 and highly reactive. Ammonia is chemically reactive and is good for oils. So I tried it on my acne. It tends to dry the skin and doesn't do a very good job on acne. I went as far as using paint thinner on acne. It didn't work on the acne and left my skin dry. I finally discovered lemons as a cure for my acne.

I prefer to apply lemon juice before bed. Nighttime is the best time for lemon juice because of a few simple facts. First, it is sticky and I'd rather not walk around with something sticky on my face. Second, the vitamin C in the juice may darken when exposed to sunlight. Have you ever seen or heard of lemon juice being used an invisible ink? The writing would only appear when the paper was exposed to heat. You do not want the same reaction when you apply the juice to your face. The is the opposite effect of apply the juice to scars to lighten them.

I find that lemon juice does mildly irritate the skin. Generally, my hide is tough and not bothered by such things. However I find it mildly painful to apply lemon juice. Sores or wound are quite painful when you apply lemon juice. If you find it too uncomfortable to wear all night, you can wash it off after ten minutes. Stinging the skin is the only side effect I experience. Some claim it can cause a rash. I recommend trying it on a test patch of skin. That way you can see how your skin reacts before you apply it to your whole face.

My experience with lemon juice has been very good. One particular time I noticed a whitehead alongside my nose. I used lemon juice on the skin and it cleared it up overnight. I have never had such results with anything else.
